FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Dr. Harvey J. Bloom Post #256 of the Jewish War Veterans of the United States of America recently was invited to the 8th Annual Bnai Zion Gala in Dallas, Texas  wherein the Post performed the Presentation of the Colors to a captive and adoring assembly of over 300 guests.   The Bnai Zion Medical Center, located in Haifa, Israel is the Crown Jewel of this 100 year old medical facility that serves northern Israel.    This highly successful gala raised funds to support the Bnai Zion Medical Center and Ahava, a youth village for children born into disadvantaged, troubled and dysfunctional households.   Senator Florence Shapiro was the Honorary Chairman and remarked how "Bnai Zion has adhered steadfastly to the principles of dedication to the ideals of Americanism and Zionism".  Dr. Amnon Rofe, the Director General of the Bnai Zion Medical Center attended the affair and commented that the presence of Post #256 added dignity to this already auspicious occasion that honored Dr. Craig Rosenfeld with the coveted Bnai Zion "Humanitarian Award" and Manny Ybarra with the "Bnai Zion Community Service Award."   Diane Benjamin, last year's Bnai Zion honoree and Chairman of this year's Bnai Zion  "One Hundred Years of Making a Difference" Gala,  is a member of the Auxiliary of the JWV Post #256 and is the wife of Past Post Commander, Jerry Benjamin.

We meet on the fourth Sunday of every month, at 9:30 AM.

Teleconference Notes—November 18, 2008

Attendees: PNC Paul Bernstein NY, Homeland Security Chairman; Ray Biondo AR; Jerry Blum CA; Jesse Gersten AZ; Mike Jacobs CA; Mike London TX; PNC Monte Mayer NY; PNC Lawrence Schulman NY; Tom Shaw MN; Allan Udell FL

Staff: NED Herb Rosenbleeth; Larry Richardson; Mrs. Bailor; Greg Byrne

Subject: Homeland Security

•           TSA will now be in charge of screening airline passengers against the government’s terrorist watch list.

•           Cyber terrorism is a major concern for the federal government.  Government websites and networks are under attack daily by hackers and foreign entities.

•           PNC Paul Bernstein recently attended a summit meeting on homeland security for Jewish organizations, where he was briefed by FBI and Homeland Security officials.

o          The FBI and Homeland Security have just raised the threat level to Heightened Alert.  The level was raised as a result of the election and the upcoming inauguration.  There is good reason to think that there will be an attack in the coming months to see how President-elect Obama will react.  This happened to Presidents Clinton and Bush.

o          There is also a strong indication that they may try to hit Wall Street or other financial targets to further damage the US and global economies.

o          An attack could come from Al Qaeda central or a lone wolf cell.  A lone wolf cell does not have the sophistication of Al Qaeda, but they are smaller and very difficult to detect.

o          If Israel attacks Iran, Jewish organizations will need to increase security.

•           Preventing terrorist attacks requires a combined effort by law enforcement, the private sector, and the general public.  Citizens must be aware of suspicious activities in their communities.
